Alexander Volkanovski and Islam Makhachev fought for the lightweight championship at UFC 294; their initial fight lasted five competitive rounds. In the opening round, Makhachev used a head kick to send Volkanovski to the ground. He then used ground strikes to finish the bout.
Just 11 days ago, Volkanovski entered the fight to replace Charles Oliveira, who had to leave due to injury. After the fight, he declared that his job as a lightweight was “done” and that he would now return to defending the featherweight championship.
Khamzat Chimaev (13-0) defeated former welterweight champion Kamaru Usman in the co-main event to earn a chance at the belt in the future. Usman, who engaged in this battle less than two weeks ago, was knocked to the ground right away and remained there for the duration of the opening round. He fought hard in rounds two and three, but he was defeated by a large margin.
