ABU DHABI At this point in his fighting career, Conor McGregor’s hunger has been questioned by many, but his coach John Kavanagh ensures that it is still very much present.
Since breaking his leg against Justin Poirier in 2021, McGregor, arguably the most successful fighter in MMA history financially, has been sidelined.
Given that he has fully recovered from his injuries and has yet to return to the octagon, many have questioned McGregor’s drive and enthusiasm in fighting.
But according to Kavanagh, the head coach of SBG Ireland, McGregor is unquestionably still eager to engage in combat and exhibits the same degree of desire today as when they first began working together when the Irishman was still a young adult.
“At this point, what is his motivation?” “I guess you’d have to ask him, but it’s definitely something I’ve wondered about,” Kavanagh told MMA Junkie. “What keeps you coming back when you’ve won the belt and all the money?” Only one thing makes sense to me. I’d like it if you could tell me something else: You adore it. You simply like it.
“When you take away someone’s financial motivation for doing something, you really learn what they want to do.” He never learned to play golf. He didn’t start fishing. He’s not the sort to embark on six month vacations. Wherever he goes, he takes a gym with him, complete with trainers and nutritionists. That’s how long it’s been since my leg broke. Since then, nothing has changed.”
McGregor just re-entered the USADA anti-doping testing pool. He has yet to set a date for his return, but he is anticipated to face Michael Chandler, with whom he coached opposing teams on The Ultimate Fighter.
Some have speculated that McGregor may never fight again, based on some of his lifestyle choices displayed on social media. However, Kavanagh believes it is just a matter of time before fans see the former UFC champion back in action
“Just today, I sent him a message, and he sent me a message back on the mats rolling with a black belt where he is now,” Kavanagh told reporters. “… He’s exercising hard and is incredibly hungry. I’m looking forward to seeing you again next year, whenever that is. I’m not sure where or when it will happen, but I’m looking forward to it.”
